Playa Ostional, Guancaste, Costa Rica - Arribada

September 2023

Every year, Playa Ostional in Costa Rica becomes the stage for one of nature’s most awe-inspiring events: the arrival of thousands of sea turtles. This small, remote beach on the Nicoya Peninsula is a vital nesting site for olive ridley sea turtles, drawing nature enthusiasts from around the world.

The phenomenon, known as “arribada,” typically occurs between June and December, with the peak nesting season in September and October. During an arribada, hundreds of thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs in the dark, moonlit sand. The sight of these ancient mariners emerging from the waves, guided by instinct to the same beach where they were born, is a testament to the wonders of the natural world.

Playa Ostional is one of the few places in the world where this event can be witnessed on such a grand scale. Conservation efforts have been critical in preserving this unique ecosystem. The Ostional Wildlife Refuge, established in 1984, ensures the protection of the turtles and their nesting grounds. Local guides and community members play a vital role in monitoring the nests and educating visitors about the importance of conservation.

Visitors to Playa Ostional can participate in guided tours to witness the turtles’ nesting process. These tours are carefully managed to minimize disturbance to the turtles, ensuring that the fragile balance of this natural event is maintained. Observing a turtle as she laboriously digs her nest and deposits her eggs is a humbling experience, connecting observers to the cycles of life that have continued for millennia.

The hatchlings’ journey to the sea, roughly 45 to 60 days after the eggs are laid, is equally captivating. Tiny turtles emerge from the sand, making their perilous trek to the ocean. This moment is both heartwarming and poignant, as only a small fraction of these hatchlings will survive to adulthood.

Playa Ostional’s arribada is more than just a wildlife event; it’s a reminder of the incredible biodiversity that our planet harbors and the importance of protecting these natural wonders for future generations. For those fortunate enough to witness it, the arrival of turtles at Playa Ostional is an unforgettable experience, a glimpse into the resilience and beauty of the natural world.

Although we didn't witness the thousands of turtles often depicted in nature documentaries, we did see hundreds on the day of our tour. It is certainly a sight to see.
